Scripps’ KTVQ in beautiful Billings, MT is seeking an Asst. Director of Engineering to join the technical team! The Asst. DOE will provide and assist the Director of Engineering (DOE) in modeling world-class customer service to all business partners internal and external to the Scripps organization with a positive “can do” attitude while sharing responsibility for broadcast operations including all video, audio and associated equipment while adhering to policies and procedures established by management.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Assists the DOE and leads a culture of empathy, customer service and leadership

  • Fosters employee engagement and supports the Director of Engineering with alignment and accountability by defining successful outcomes, aligned station goals and leading technology and engineering change initiatives and roadmaps that empower change readiness.

  • Under the direction of the  Director of Engineering, may manage a small technology and engineering team including the support of interviewing and selection, on-boarding, coaching and empowering customer centric high-performance teams.

  • Fosters equity,  diversity and inclusion including integration into the customer experience  while leading change readiness.

  • Backs up the Dir, Engineering in managing the installation and repair of all television, digital, Over The Top (OTT) and internet systems and equipment.

  • Assists in managing the scheduling of personnel.

  • Partners with the news department to develop, build and support content workflow and support systems including integration and problem-solving software, hardware, networking, and infrastructure.

  • Motivates and manages a staff of professional and technical engineers, operators, and IT technicians. Develop and grow staff in technology and Scripps culture to meet the on-going and future technological needs of the station.

  • Facilitates a collaborative environment between newsroom and production control staff.

  • Collaborates with DOE on staff career growth and assessment.

  • Monitors and enforces engineering procedures, regulation and policies as set by management. Assist in establishing and implementing policies and procedures.

  • Use company purchasing management system to purchase and track assets and services as well as replacement cycles.

  • Supports content workflow and support systems including integration and problem-solving software, hardware, networking and infrastructure. This will include support and integration of audio and video, cameras, editing systems, streaming, content management and workflow.

  • Designs and takes a leadership role in the support, maintenance, and installation of the full range of broadcast, Radio Frequency (RF), and production systems based on both Serial Digital Interface (SDI), and Internet Protocol (IP) based architecture.

  • Researches, coordinates and designs solutions for setup and enhancement of software, hardware, server, automation and workflow systems, projects, and equipment to enable our teams to be both productive and efficient. Ensure all meet current industry standards and comply with Company policies and expectations.

  • Ensures technical plan documentation is updated when installations are completed to include changes that are made.

  • Works with Dir, Engineering to determine current and future studio needs.

  • Assists with tracking of repair and maintenance budgets.

  • Assists with the evaluation of equipment solutions, and capital planning.

  • Communicates professionally with individuals and groups within and outside of the station.

  • Maintains a positive culture and employee relations.

  • Keeps the station compliant with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) Rules and Regulations, as well as related local, state and federal regulations.

  • Performs other duties as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • An Associate degree in computer science, electrical or electronic engineering; or equivalent experience.

  • At least 3 years broadcast operations experience.

  • Must understand electronic, electrical, mechanical and information systems.

  • “Customer service first” mindset, ability to deliver a high level of customer service.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Must be able to function during demanding and stressful periods and be time flexible

  • Ability to relate technical matters to non-technical users and ability to relate business matters to technical staff. Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Highly self-directed and can work independently.

  • Can manage shifting priorities, demands and timelines smoothly.

  • Knowledge of FCC rules.

  • Must understand electronic, electrical, mechanical and information systems.

  • Must have a keen interest in emerging broadcast related technologies and how they might be utilized in our business environment.

  • Strong and effective communication skills with all levels of internal and external customers and partners.

  • Can manage shifting priorities, demands and timelines smoothly

  • Effective application of emotional intelligence with ability to recognize one’s owns feeling and understand others to guide objective thinking and improved behaviors to achieve better decisions, and collaborative successful outcomes.

  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

  • Related certification in technology and engineering such as Network certification, SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers) related certification, SDA (Service Desk Analyst) certification, UX (User Experience) certification aimed at customer-centric process, design and adoption, Agile or Scrum Master certification with a focus on technology project planning and supporting digital technology transformation or other related certifications and frameworks preferred.

OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER:

  • Valid Driver’s License, good driving record and ability to provide proof of insurability with company required insurance limits.

  • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to occasionally support demands such as Tower operations in Montana remote backcountry conditions and apply safety standards associated such as avalanche safety, Bear aware, orienting, and wildlife and wilderness safety related to the unique environmental and physical demands.       

  • Ability to operate and drive vehicles required such as snowmobiles to reach Towers.
